Alarms go off as iPhone Duo scams seem to be on cards

Apple said it was working to "quickly identify and cancel any fraudulent transactions" possibly linked to one of its latest iPhones, the pre-sales of which started on Friday night. This came as SAR residents reported on social media having been billed for multiple credit card purchases for just one order of the iPhone Duo or, in some instances, no such transaction at all. Some of the transactions involved HSBC credit cards. Police have received more than 100 reports of suspected unauthorised credit card transactions, involving at least millions of dollars, according to sources. “All current iPhone Duo orders are being reviewed before they are processed,” Apple said in a statement. HSBC, for its part, said it was aware of online discussions involving its credit cards. Its spokesperson said customers would not be liable for duplicate transactions and that the bank will identify and cancel them. A similar incident happened last month during pre-sales of two other iPhones, with the total amount involved surpassing HK$30 million in suspected credit card scams. Edited by Azam Khan

However, there is another, lesser-known factor that works more subtly and implicitly. It comes not from economics but from the structure of the language or languages we speak each day. Consider a...

A missionary’s stories of the Kowloon Walled City live on at a new exhibition in Hong Kong

St Stephen’s Society looks more like a contemporary art gallery than a rehabilitation facility. At the non-profit Christian charity’s compound in Hong Kong’s New Territories, there are corridors lined with sketches, canvases and photography and a wall of art supplies. Founder Jacqueline “Jackie” Pullinger, a British missionary now in her eighties, proudly looks at the artwork created by its residents. A selection will be showcased at the upcoming exhibition “285 and Counting”, named for the...
