The chairman of the San Tin Technopole Company, Sunny Chai, has said Hong Kong must be clear about which industries to develop given its limited land, arguing that life sciences should be housed at the Lok Ma Chau Loop while San Tin should focus on microelectronics, robotics and green manufacturing. In an interview with RTHK's "On Broadcast Drive" programme, Chai said the government's heavy investment in innovation and technology in recent years was going in "the right direction". He said Hong Kong's industrial land prices had traditionally been far higher than those in Shenzhen and Shantou, but the recent land price for the Sandy Ridge supercomputing centre is now comparable to that of the two mainland cities. Chai said land prices and tax incentives are critical to attracting advanced manufacturing partners to the city. He also said the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement with the mainland has not been updated for many years, and he believed there is room for improvement. Chai was appointed as the first chairman of the San Tin Technopole Company in May for a three-year term starting July 1. The company is wholly owned by the government and will oversee the development of 210 hectares of land for innovation and technology within the technopole. Edited by Aaron Tam
