People trapped in lifts in CLP voltage dip

The Fire Services Department received 179 reports of people being trapped in lifts and 40 cases of fire alarms being activated after CLP reported a brief voltage dip on Tuesday afternoon. A spokesperson of CLP said the dip was recorded on its power supply lines between Lai Chi Kok and Tsz Wan Shan at around 1.09pm. There was no power outage during the period, according to the firm. However, it said some clients might have experienced a dimming or flickering of lights, while some electrical installations sensitive to voltage changes might have had their operations suspended due to activation of protection systems. Acting deputy chief fire officer Yung Wai-ming said four people felt unwell after being trapped in lifts, with three of them sent to hospital for treatment. "The person who was not sent to a hospital felt unwell at first but did not require hospital treatment after being rescued by us. As for the other three, they felt unwell and shortness of breath. One of them was found to have high blood pressure," he said. Yung added that the Fire Services Department has completed all rescue and follow-up operations. CLP said it was following up on the incident. Edited by Edmond Fong

Japan, US review military liberty policies after Okinawa killing

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on Tuesday that officials were reviewing the off-base code of conduct for US troops in Japan following the alleged killing of an Okinawan woman by a US marine. Crimes including rapes, assaults, hit-and-runs and drunk driving by US military personnel have long triggered protests on the southern Japanese island, which has for years urged other regions in the country to share the burden of hosting US troops. “We plan to hold discussions including...
