Malaysia urged to police its firms in Indonesia as haze shuts schools

Malaysia is facing renewed pressure to clamp down on its companies over their alleged links to forest fires abroad, as recurring haze from Indonesia continues to disrupt schools and daily life despite years of regional efforts to tackle the problem. On Thursday, Malaysia ordered schools to close across several states, including Johor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and the Rompin district in Pahang, while sporting events scheduled for the weekend were cancelled. Japanese brewer designs ‘wobbly’ beer glass to encourage responsible drinking

A craft beer producer in central Japan is hoping that its U-shaped “wobbly” glass will encourage people to drink water along with their beer, in a bid to prevent excessive alcohol consumption and dehydration. The “Wobbly Beer Glass by Yona Yona Ale”, produced by Yoho Brewing based in Nagano prefecture, has been on sale since August amid growing awareness of the need for responsible drinking. The idea is that the glass, divided into two sections, will tilt if a balance between beer and water is...

Modi and Xi can’t bridge the India-China divide by themselves

Last month, President Xi Jinping travelled to New Delhi to attend the Brics summit – his first visit in seven years. On the summit’s sidelines, Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had an in-depth conversation that explored topics of shared interest between them, such as leveraging open-weight artificial intelligence (AI) for mutual benefit. Even so, such sanguine signals were soon drowned out by a spate of downbeat headlines. One recent story warned of the “asymmetric” relationship...

India’s ‘cockroach’ movement leader detained as capital locks down

Police detained more than 2,000 protesters and the founder of the “cockroach” youth movement in Delhi on Saturday as security forces locked down parts of the capital to thwart a demonstration demanding the resignation of India’s election chief. Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across the city, mobile internet services were suspended in the central business district, and dozens of metro stations and markets were shut as authorities moved to stop a rally organised by...

Lack of heat action plan leaves Hong Kong’s vulnerable residents at risk, experts warn

Environmentalists and academics have voiced concerns over the omission of a systemic heat-health action plan in Hong Kong’s first five-year plan and latest policy address, warning that relying on “common sense” is failing to protect vulnerable residents from rising temperatures. Their comments came as new research from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) found that extreme heat might have contributed to as many as 3,238 excess deaths in the city over 10-year study period. In response to the South...

New Taipei-Hong Kong subsea route opened to cut risk and meet AI demand

One of the world’s biggest network service providers has opened a new subsea route between Taipei and Hong Kong to strengthen the system against repeated underwater cable disruptions around the island. Britain-headquartered RETN said the new route would take its total to six serving Taiwan: four connecting Taipei and Hong Kong, and two linking Taipei and Tokyo. “Like many island economies, Taiwan’s international connectivity relies heavily on subsea cables, which creates exposure to risks such...

Rockets beat Mavericks in Macao NBA China game

Basketball fans gathered in Macao on Friday as the NBA China Games returned for a second year in the city, with Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant drawing some of the biggest crowds ahead of the preseason clash against the Dallas Mavericks. Supporters queued to take photos with NBA-themed installations, team displays and the Larry O'Brien Trophy at NBA House Macao before making their way to the Venetian Arena for the first of two preseason games between Houston and Dallas. "I came all the way from Harbin in Heilongjiang province, so this is a really rare opportunity for me," said 24-year-old Durant fan Cao Peng. "To be here and see Durant in person is incredible." The Rockets beat the Mavericks 135-117 in Friday's opener, with Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg scoring 19 points in 19 minutes on 7-of-14 shooting while playing only the first half. "Chinese fans have always given tremendous support to the NBA," Cao said. "I hope more teams will come here in the future." Durant said he appreciated the enthusiasm shown by fans in Macao. "When you come out here and you get the appreciation and respect that you've earned as players that made it this far, it's pretty cool," Durant told reporters after the game. The former MVP said Houston's focus remained on building towards championship contention, but cautioned against reading too much into preseason results. The Mavericks and Rockets meet again on Sunday in the second and final preseason game of the NBA China Games in Macao. Edited by Robert Kemp
